March weather

dried dahlia on white snow

"Our life is March weather, savage and serene in one hour.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

March 3rd we had an incredible snowstorm, complete with thunder and lightning. I just sat in the living room and took in the show. A week later, another dump of snow and lots of shovelling. And then again, in time for St. Patrick's day.

winter thunder storm

The snow drops survived, and the bulbs near the house starting popping up in defiance.

By the end of March, I was actually taking a shovel to the remaining piles of snow in the backyard. I'd seen hellebores popping up during my neighbourhood walks, and my lenten roses were buried. It felt extremely satisfying to dig in to the snow pile and toss it on the river stone.
