Eyjafjallajokull is on my mind a lot these days.
Interesting facts like:
- this could be spewing for a year
- spewing = grounded flights
- grounded flights = problem getting to Barcelona to depart for cruise
- problem = no cruise
- insurance = force majeure
One of my 'liked minds', Clever Pup is blogging her concerns about the citizens of Iceland.
In the meantime I'll try to find something to love about volcanoes and their unpredictable eruptions:
- Majestic to watch
- Cooling effect on the climate (given the perils of global warming this is not a small thing)
- Ash will probably make this a remarkable vintage for wine... and will have a positive effect on the terroir in coming years
- How can we not be in awe about something with the power to bring civilization to its knees.... I'm thinking about Pompeii but also thinking about Eyjafjallajokull throwing most of the planet back to days before inter-continental flight
- Amazing sunsets... when Mount Saint Helen erupted the sunsets on the Great Lakes were outstanding for at least two summers

Oh I feel so bad about this, Diane. Your trip.I just saw your comment at Hazel's. I've spent so much time around Vesuvius & Mt. Etna (& elsewhere in Med, dormant volcanoes) that I assume I'll be caught up in it at some point. Which is weird. That I figure on it. I'm so sorry. There may be a way to make this work soon/rework. I sure hope so. Meanwhile, I admire your attitude.
Oh I do hope you're able to make it. If the cruise company is unyielding then they are in trouble in more ways than one. I'm anticipating that everything will just be rescheduled. Are you really going to Cinque Terre? The nearest I got to that was doing a 3000 piece puzzle of Manarola
Diane...any news yet?
Giulia, thanks for asking! Right now we are told that since we booked the flights through the cruise line, if the flights are canceled we will be reimbursed airfare and given a coupon for a future cruise.
Hoping the volcano stops burping! I want to continue my trip research but part of me is now 'holding back', if you know what I mean.
About 3 weeks to go, so my fingers (and toes) remain crossed.
I know sort of what you mean. But as I'm a researcher I couldn't help myself. If you have any particular questions, I might be able to give you a quick answer or direction. This is my actual area of academic expertise. (Although it's hugely fun to do oneself.) I'm keeping my eye out for the volcano & will check back to see what's up with the trip. But that is good financial news...& you'll have to rebook because all of us will pester you (if that should prove necessary:)
your area of expertise is travel, or volcanoes? Either way I could think of questions.
:-)
